A disquieting allure radiates from the works of illustrator Michael Ostermann, whose visual aesthetic plays on a cunning fusion of the beautiful and the bizarre. With his digital illustrations that seamlessly hybridise fine art, digital art and fashion photography, the Vienna-based artist transforms editorial shoots by assigning them to surreal, fantasy-like and even somewhat futuristic narratives that reveal their dark nature.
Such narratives are a particularly intriguing aspect of Ostermann’s work, and are brought to life through realistic photomanipulation techniques and a skilled layering of illustrated detail. The use of complex angular shapes and geometric motifs lends his art an alien quality which, when combined with the ever-present themes of death and the macabre, reveals a particularly frightening edge to the photographs which he reworks. Although dominantly black and white, these details fill each piece with a richness of texture and tones; they enhance a setting’s mood and a model’s character, and appear to blend in almost naturally every time.
Ostermann’s work, although powerful and sharp, still conveys a surprising delicateness through its play on soft contrasts and shadows – and this, one could argue, is what makes each piece so curious and compelling. He produces art which not only demonstrates his peculiar vision, but also remains a real treat to the eye as it blends, repeats and multiplies layers of abstractions and beauty in the most fantastic ways.
